One of the questions we’re asked most often is whether green oak or kiln-dried oak is the better choice.
The truth is they both have their place.
At JMK Oak Frame, we use both, but for very different reasons.
Green Oak
Green oak has been used in traditional timber framing for centuries.
It contains natural moisture, allowing the timber to season gradually once installed. During this process, the oak develops the character that makes traditional oak frames so desirable.
Small surface splits, known as shakes, are completely natural and don’t affect the structural performance of the frame.
Kiln-Dried Oak
Kiln-dried oak has a much lower moisture content and is far more stable.
We use it for glazing systems, doors and fine joinery where movement needs to be kept to a minimum.
Why We Use Both
Our structural frames are built using carefully selected green oak with traditional mortise and tenon joints secured using solid oak pegs.
Where precision joinery is required around glazing, we introduce kiln-dried oak to achieve the best possible finish.
Using each material where it performs best gives our clients the beauty of traditional oak alongside modern performance.
